Creating a digital platform that increases access to books in Indonesia.
What they do
Improving literacy rates has the ability to transform individuals and communities. Many students around the globe lack access to opportunities that develop critical reading and writing skills. In Indonesia, for every 100 students who enter school, only 25 exit meeting minimum international standards of literacy and numeracy.
Room to Read works with local communities, partner organizations, and governments to ensure that the benefits of literacy reach every corner of the world. Since 2014, Room to Read - through its Accelerator program - has focused on creating a rich reading ecosystem in Indonesia by building the capacity of local organizations to establish school libraries and develop high quality storybooks for early readers in Bahasa Indonesian.
How we're helping
Google.org’s support will enable Room to Read to create a platform that promotes literacy in Indonesia in two ways: increasing access to digital Bahasa children's stories through a new digital platform that enables the creation and translation of openly licensed books, and training teachers on activities that improve reading. Multilingual Google volunteers in Jakarta plan to lend their time to translate existing children's stories to increase the diversity of Bahasa reading resources available to students. Alongside local Indonesian organizations, Room to Read will help improve the early reading experiences of over 200,000 students within three years.
