Gamified learning to help students improve in math and science
What they do
gidimo is a mobile personalized learning and advancement app, built to help students learn independently using low-cost feature phones. Using online learning communities and content that steadily pushes learners toward mastery, gidimo has helped tens of thousands of students practice core concepts pulled from the Nigerian curriculum.
How we're helping
Across much of Sub Saharan Africa, as access to secondary schooling, especially for girls, has steadily inched upwards, indicators of quality have not kept pace. In Nigeria for example, according to data from the West African Examinations Council, an average of 72% of graduating senior high school students failed their certification exams each year from 2005 to 2015.
Gidi Mobile addresses this problem by giving learners across Nigeria access to an app that promotes mastery through continuous, incentivised practice and allows students to learn anytime, anywhere. The gidimo app encourages learner participation with a variety of gaming and social features, including challenge competitions and sponsored prizes. The app is designed to work on a variety of low-cost phones and in offline mode.
With support from Google.org, Gidi Mobile will expand its Senior School program to reach students in junior high school with new lessons, videos, concept explanations, and questions aligned to the Nigerian curriculum. These lessons will also be made freely available to other technologists building tools for Nigerian students. Google.org’s will also fund one-year subscriptions to gidimo to 100,000 low-income senior secondary students.
