UCP Wheels for Humanity
UCP Wheels for Humanity is collecting data on wheelchair usage in developing countries to ensure everyone has access to the chair that best suits their individual needs.
Developing countries rarely have data on the performance and usage of wheelchairs provided by donors, aid agencies, and governments to low-income individuals. Since different chairs are needed to accommodate the wide variety of people with disabilities, this data is needed to ensure users have the best chair to maximize their health and independence.
With a $999,995 grant from Google.org, UCP is using sensors to collect data on wheelchair performance, as well as SMS to survey users about their own wheelchair usage. The combined data will be shared in an online database for donors and governments to review before purchasing wheelchairs.
With more data available, over 200,000 users will have better access to the wheelchair that best meets their individual needs, increasing their daily distance traveled by 20%.
